Anti-car: Mercedes review

Probably, many know about such popular among the youth institutions, as an anti-cinema and anti-cafe. That’s in the «Mercedes», making a new E-Class, released their anti-car.

Surprisingly, the inventors of these ideas managed to enclose their own content and meaning in the very word «anti». Unlike traditional entertainment, they, by and large, provide visitors with a cozy space, which they use at their own discretion. So, in anti-cinemas there are film libraries. But most of the time viewers bring flash drives with them. In anti-places you do not impose a program — here you create it yourself.

As for the Mercedes E-Class, which received the factory index W 213, then in it the first sign of an anti-car is the rate on the interior, the second is the huge attention paid to the technologies of autonomous driving

In fact, in Mercedes-Benz, the concept of the car was redefined. Now this is not a «vehicle» and not a «driving pleasure». Now, if you want, it’s a pleasure from being in the car. And if he is going (probably independently, without your participation) or is standing in a traffic jam — this is how it will turn out.

If almost verbatim, in Stuttgart they formulate their approach as follows: along with the workplace and the house the car is called to become the third space for life, where the driver and passengers enjoy modern luxury. Pay attention: the marketing specialists of Mercedes-Benz not only are sure that at work each person is not less pleasant than at home, but also puts it on the first place. However, if you work somewhere in Google, then this is likely. Well, what the German company understands is modern luxury, eloquently tells the interior of the W 213 sedan.

The main element of the design of the E-Class is the display, which, like the S-Class, is made up of two screens, each with a diagonal of 12.3 inches. However, their resolution is higher than in the S-Class — 1920×720. In addition, the monitors are covered with a common glass, so that the whole design gives the impression of an even better quality.

Functionally, the screens are divided: the left will replace the instrument panel, and the picture of the multimedia system will be displayed on the right. The screens, as in Mercedes, are not touchscreens. But in the new E-Class there were mini-touchpads on the spokes of the steering wheel. Here everything corresponds to the displays: the touch buttons on the left spoke are responsible for the instruments, on the right one — for communication and entertainment.

In addition, as in all the new «Mercedes», in the E-Class multimedia functions can be controlled using the touch panel located on the center console. There is also a voice control system Linguatronic, which, however, has not yet received the support of the Russian language. Finally, direct access buttons are provided, simplifying, in particular, climate control, as well as a number of auxiliary systems.

Electronic dashboard «yeshki» allows you to choose one of three options for displaying information: classic style, sporty or progressive. This gives an opportunity, both to take into account the taste preferences of different drivers, and to adapt the readings of devices to the Dynamic Select modes.

The display is, of course, cool! But without the appropriate interface, it becomes a glass. Realizing this and trying to bring the interaction of the driver and his car to a new level, Mercedes designers tried to combine the intuitive simplicity of using the electronic devices of the car with their attractive design.

Two new departments — Digital Graphic & Corporate Design («Digital Graphic and Corporate Design») and User Interaction («User Interaction»), whose employees closely interacted with each other — were engaged in this work. As a result, the interface in the E-Class is not only understandable and convenient, but also «delicious» — the driver and passengers can enjoy the process of managing various functions.

In addition to the touchpads on the spokes of the steering wheel, other new functions appeared in the «machine.» In particular, this car supports NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, which allows using a compatible smartphone as a digital key. The same protocol helps to connect the phone to a multimedia system. In addition, the smartphone connects to an external antenna without wires, and recharges, being in the car, without using them.

Finally, the LED illumination of the E-Class interior has 64 shades, while the S-Class is satisfied with only seven options.

It should be noted that the design of the devices mentioned above is made in a progressive way — in the style of modern consumer electronics. While everything else in the E-Class has a classic design. I would even call it classically luxurious.

Embracing soft forms, smooth flexible lines, all this is finished with materials of the highest quality, with dozens of variants, and hundreds of combinations. Most of all I liked the finish in wood in the style of the «deck of the yacht», as well as the warm brown tones of the leather upholstery of the seats.

Meets materials and equipment. Seats at the E-Class are multi-circuit, with a lot of adjustments and eight massage programs. And all the armrests are equipped with heating.

Interestingly, a similar combination of two different styles in one interior works — where it contrasts, and in places quite the opposite — one decorates the other. Quintessence of the same «mixed», in my opinion, is the acoustic system of surround sound from Burmester class High-End. In total, it uses 23 speakers, including those that are mounted on the ceiling of the cabin. In addition, the Burmester system uses the internal space of the crossbars and body side members as resonators. But the main thing is not even this: on the one hand, it’s advanced technologies and algorithms of sound processing, and on the other — literally every speaker Burmester, which you see in the interior of the E-Class, is the subtlest piece of art craft. This performance is more likely to be found in a tastefully decorated apartment than in a car of some other brand.

Mercedes W 213 has become much more comfortable than its predecessor, not only due to better equipment, but also due to the increased size. The length of the newest sedan increased by 43 mm (up to 4,923 mm), and the wheelbase extended by 65 mm (up to 2939 mm). This, of course, led to a slight change in proportions.

In the design of the exterior of the E-Class, no revolution happened. He only slightly develops those solutions that were worked out on the cars of classes «S» and «C». True, there is a trio of subtle ornaments, as well as the option to choose (with the car’s performance line) one of the two radiator grilles — classic, with a star on the hood, or sports, which has a large brand emblem placed directly on the hood.

By «ornaments» I mean the headlights of the Multibeam Led headlamp, each of which consists of 84 LEDs, and already thanks to this it looks very interesting, as well as the rear lights, with the glow of which there is a so-called «star dust» effect. And, finally, double LED eyebrows, probably, should remind of the twin headlights, which were once a characteristic element of the design of «yeshki».

By the way, the new E-Class, and in fact, not only looks very much like its older and younger brothers in the current model line, but also left the classmate of the previous generation quite close. However, the manufacturers of premium segment machines do not make the design of their cars too progressive, so that the cars of past generations do not become obsolete morally, and their owners did not feel restrained.

Perhaps, the following factor also affected — somehow one of my relatives, a man with a developed taste, nevertheless, remarked: «I do not really care how the car looks outside, as I see it from the inside.»

Either way, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class W 213 looks decent. Consciousness and calm emanate from him, and at the same time he does not feel the slightest aggression.

At the same time, German engineers-developers again achieved excellent streamlining of their creation. The coefficient of aerodynamic resistance of the new «yeshki» is 0.23, which was the best indicator in the class. If I remember correctly, then Mercedes is now the champion in aerodynamics in all classes. Innovation in the E-Class has become active shutters, which can be installed not only behind the grille, but also in the bumper.

Good aerodynamics saves fuel. Just like the new diesel engine OM 654, which is installed on the model E 220 d. This is a 4-cylinder in-line motor with a capacity of 1950 cu. cm, developing power of 143 kW (190 hp) and a torque of 400 Nm. The diesel engine is aggregated with an automatic 9-speed 9G-Tronic transmission. With such a power unit, the Mercedes-Benz W 213 sedan consumes just 3.9 l / 100 km with the combined cycle. With regard to harmful emissions, the OM 654 diesel not only complies with modern legislation, but also with the promising norms of Real Driving Emissions (RDE), which, once introduced in the EU in 2017, will be measured not in the laboratory but in «real conditions movement «. The fuel consumption figures are even more impressive against the background of the acceleration dynamics — 7.3 seconds to 100 km / h. It is also important that the compact OM 654 with aluminum block and cylinder head, equipped with a turbine with variable geometry, will become the ancestor for the modular family of inline 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines.

However, the model E 350 e is even more economical. It is equipped with a hybrid power plant consisting of a petrol 4-cylinder in-line engine with a power of 155 kW (205 hp) and an electric motor with a power of 60 kW. In this case, the engine develops a maximum torque of 350 Nm, and the torque of the electric motor is 360 Nm. The total torque of the power plant is limited to 600 Nm.

Sedan Mercedes-Benz E 350 e consumes in a mixed cycle of only 2.1 liters of gasoline per 100 km, while throwing into the air 40 g of CO2 per km. Obviously, this car achieves such indicators due to its ability to drive electric traction up to 30 km. Helps the electric motor and during acceleration — the time for which the E 350 e is able to gain 100 km / h is 6.2 seconds.

The base for the sedan Mercedes W 213 is a four-cylinder in-line petrol engine with a displacement of 1991 cu. see this engine in combination with the transmission 9G-Tronic put on the model E 200. It develops 135 kW (184 hp) and 300 Nm. Sedan Mercedes E 200 accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.7 seconds. The fuel consumption in the mixed cycle is 5.9 l / 100 km, and the CO2 emissions are 132 g / km.

When in the middle of spring in Russia sales of the new E-Class begin, only two models will be available — E 200 and E 220 d. The rest will appear at the dealers later. In addition to the hybrid model E 350 e, which I already mentioned, other versions are expected.

In particular, we mean a three-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine V6 with a power of 190 kW (258 hp) and a torque of 640 Nm. Such a motor will be put on the E 350 d. Also Mercedes promises model E 400 4MATIC with the petrol V-shaped «six» volume of 3.5 l, equipped with a double turbo, developing the power of 245 kW (333 hp). Then there will be a modest diesel engine with a capacity of 110 kW (150 hp), as well as a number of forced petrol turbo-trains, based on the one I called the base. Well, one day the line will reach the line «sixes» — gasoline and diesel. The Germans allude to the fact that this will happen before the planned restyling.

I have not written a word about the platform on which the new E-Class is based. And it is the same as for the S-Class (W 222) and the C-Class (W 205). This dictates the same suspension: two-lever — in front, multi-link — behind. In the basic version, springs are used, but they are offered in three versions. In the first case, the suspension is referred to as «basic comfort», in the second — «avant-garde» (it is understated by 15 mm), and in the third — «sporty». Sports, the suspension has the same height as the avant-garde, but is equipped with electronically-controlled shock absorbers.

As an option, you can order a multi-chamber air suspension, which is supplemented by adaptive shock absorbers. In the front pillars of this suspension there are two cameras of different sizes, while in the rear — three. With the Dynamic Select switch located on the center console, the driver can choose between four modes of the Air Body Control system: Comfort, ECO, Sport, and Sport +. In addition, with the help of an additional «Individual» setting, the driver can configure the car according to his own preferences.

And to the E-Class adapt the ERA platform, which is an electromobile analog of the MRA platform. Thus, in Mercedes-Benz they want to prepare for any development of events, which depends not on this company and not even on the car industry as a whole, but on the decision of the world community, more precisely, the world elites.

In connection with these, it is interesting that the theme of the annual World Economic Forum in Davos in January this year was the «Fourth Industrial Revolution». With regard to the automotive industry in general, and to Mercedes-Benz in particular, this means the development of a continuous chain of digital processes — from research and development, to production, marketing, logistics and services. Here, as far as I understand, there are also tasks related to alternative energy and alternative power drives, as well as the topic of autonomous driving or autopilot. All this, I stress, is not fiction. In all these areas, car companies work in a practical way, in a daily mode, besides striving to get ahead of each other. And concern Daimler, the company Mercedes-Benz, among them, if not the very first, then at least among the first.

Everything, of course, is done gradually, with small steps. For example, the task of creating a full-fledged autopilot seems to have been broken into hundreds of minor subtasks. Elements, which are created in the process of solving such small subtasks, are introduced into serial cars. Thus, consumers are encouraged to join the payment for the movement to a brighter future today. Although many technologies are still very «damp». I write «call», not «force», since most auxiliary systems, especially the most advanced, are options.

So on the new «eashka» only emergency braking systems are installed in the base, controlling the driver’s fatigue and stabilization in the side wind.

But the Drive Pilot can be obtained only for a surcharge. This system is a prototype of a full autopilot. Thanks to her, the W 213 is able to maintain the distance, the pace and the range of motion without the driver’s participation at a speed of up to 210 km / h. However, if the quality of the markup deteriorates or if it is not there, the speed limit will drop sharply — to 130 km / h. And the turns should be smooth. At steep turns, the Drive Pilot system is only being taught to pilot ….

Also, the new E-Class is able to recognize the restrictive signs if the video camera sees them, or they are stored in the navigation memory — not only to recognize, but also to bring the speed of the car with them in line.

Another interesting auxiliary technology is the system of active rebuilding. And really, why look into the mirrors, click the turn signal and turn the steering wheel, if only one turn signal is enough — held it for more than two seconds and the car itself will be rebuilt.

And with the help of the «smartphone» mentioned at the beginning of the article, you can not only open, but also park. This function is useful in very narrow places where there is no way to open the car doors. In such cases, the driver will be able to put the car in the parking lot or bring it back, while outside it.

The function of Car-to-X Communication and at all — almost a genius. It allows the E-Class to be able to exchange information with other cars, as well as objects of the road infrastructure, if these «partners» also have similar capabilities.

In connection with all the above, I think it makes sense to look into the future and imagine what the process of driving by a car, say, in five years, will look like.

A person leaves the house (from the office), sits in a car, and on the way to work (home) does what he normally does at home (at work), waiting for the moment when the car reaches its goal. At the same time, many services prompt the car (not the driver) how best to bypass traffic jams, and the driver, in turn, is reminded that the car passes by interesting and useful places for him.

Also, for example, there may be information that your friends were near the will of the autopilot, with a reminder that you can drink coffee in your favorite coffee shop, which is located nearby. Of course, your comrades will receive the same proposal ….

And to prepare for such an exciting future, it is just worth buying the E-Class, and in the maximum configuration. The latter is useful in two senses at once. Firstly, complete equipping with auxiliary systems will make your car look more like a car of the future. And, secondly, the amount you paid will accelerate the approach of the era of autopilotation ….
